To all FJMC Members from Rabbi Charles Simon

A Message I Wish I Did Not Have To Write
Once again, Israel faces crisis. Once again you, as I, will receive a multitude of appeals for funds.
You may recall that earlier this year the Masorti Foundation worked with our colleagues in the Conservative movement to coordinate fundraising efforts. We were successful in providing support not only for programs in and for residents of Sderot and nearby areas, including support for summer day camp for young children, but also in underwriting the bulk of the cost for significant physical improvements to the Masorti kehilla in Ashkelon. This was especially important because of the 200 young children in the gan program at the kehilla.
We need your help again.
Day trips out of the affected areas have proven to be quite important from a psychological perspective. The Masorti movement in Israel has already sponsored close to 40 trips from Sderot. Participants are selected by local community organizations. All trips include sightseeing and a good restaurant meal. Masorti will now do more such trips, and will expand them to include the Ashkelon area.
Masorti will also provide special programming in both Sderot and Ashkelon through its NOAM youth group and MAROM program for college age young adults. The MAROM programming in Sderot, in conjunction with Sapir College, has already been able to involve several hundred. More work needs to be done in Ashkelon, including more reinforcement for the kindergarten area, air conditioning for the shelters, more protective covering for windows and funding for a social worker to help with problems of traumatic stress among the children.
Masorti rabbis, as was true during the time of the Lebanon War, will be visiting in Ashkelon, Ashdod (where there is also a Masorti kehilla), Sderot and other areas to provide counseling and support.
Funds are urgently needed for all of the above. Checks should be sent to the Masorti Foundation, 475 Riverside Drive Suite 832, New York, NY 10115. Checks should be marked Emergency Appeal. Online contributions can be made at www.masorti.org. Click on Contributions and then in Gift Allocation click Emergency Appeal.
If there are questions, please call the Masorti Foundation office at 212-870-2216.

What is Keruv
The word "keruv" is Hebrew, and its root means "to bring close." As the word implies, keruv initiatives are aimed at bringing people closer to the synagogue, the Jewish community, and Jewish life itself. The Federation of Jewish Men's Club and the USCJ's Keruv initiatives, seek to provide guidance and comfort to those within congregations who are intermarried, whose children are intermarried, or who have extended family of another faith. The issue of intermarriage confronts us as a community and within our own families. Given the fact of the dual faith marriage, how do we reach out to encourage these families to adopt a Jewish lifestyle, indeed to increase their involvement in Jewish life? Where do we begin as a congregation and as individuals to transform ourselves to make this outreach a success? Should this be a priority at this time?
Here at Tifereth Israel Men’s Club Vice President Bill Chronister and Treasurer Matthew Kennedy are leading the effort. If you have questions, please share them with Bill and Matt.

Build-a-Pair and the World Wide Wrap: In the coming year the Men’s Club will be partnering with the Hebrew School in a new educational program called Build-a-Pair. This is a comprehensive and fun learning program to introduce 5th-graders to the joy and mitzvah of Teffilin in Jewish life. Students will practice writing their Hebrew/Jewish names and the SHEMA (first line) to insert into pre-made wooden Teffilin boxes.

Build-a-Pair kicks off at Tifereth Israel

Men's Club President Dale Levy describes Tefillin and explains what students will be doing in the course leading up to the 2009 World Wide Wrap at Congregationl Tifereth Israel.

Bill Cohen puts elections in perspective

Reporter Bill Cohen receives his official Men’s Club mug
from President Dale Levy after speaking on Nov. 9

The Tifereth Israel Men’s Club welcomed Bill Cohen of the Statehouse News Bureau and National Public Radio to the latest installment of its brunch speaker series on Sunday, November 9th. Cohen continued the unspoken theme of speaking about issues hitting close to home begun by previous speakers Frances Strickland and Howard Schottenstein by focusing on a topic that has been at the forefront of news in Ohio for almost two years now: the recent election.

Cohen is now in his 34th year of news reporting for Ohio's public radio and TV stations. He can be heard regularly on national radio programs such as “Marketplace," NPR’s "All Things Considered" and "Morning Edition," the weekly public TV show, "The State of Ohio," and Ohio News Network’s "Capitol Square," which he also produces. In 2002, the Association of Capitol Reporters and Editors gave him its national first place award for best radio beat reporting on state government and in 2004, The Ohio Associated Press Broadcasters presented Cohen with its annual "Lifetime Achievement Award."The talk was well-timed to summarize the results of the national and statewide elections. He provided his keen insights colored with a rich historical perspective on the Obama and McCain campaigns, the hotly-contested statewide issues over payday lending and casino gambling and key congressional races. A lively question and answer period touched on many other important issues highlighted by Bill’s predictions on significant 2010 statewide voter issues.
The next brunch speaker series event will feature Gary Smith, president of Men’s Club at Adath Israel Congregation in Cincinnati and a Federation of Jewish Men’s Club (FJMC) Keruv consultant. Called by fellow consultant Stephen Lachter of Washington DC “the most profound and important thing going on in the Conservative movement today,” Keruv (which means "bring near" in Hebrew and is therefore a term frequently used for outreach information) is a FJMC initiative to integrate non-Jewish members of families into synagogue life and the Jewish community. Please join us on Sunday December 14th at 10:30am at Tifereth Israel for this very important topic of discussion.

KIO/Michigan/Tri-State joint retreat

About 20 men showed up Oct. 24-26 from men's clubs at Conservative congregations in Michigan, western Pennsylvania, Cincinnati, Kentucky and Columbus for the first KIO/Michigan/Tri-State regional retreat at Deer Creek Resort and Conference Center in Mount Sterling.
Ron Ferer of Columbus' Agudas Achim arranged for the catering by Chani and brought a Torah. Douglas Segerman brought the siddurim and chumashim.
There were a number of great ideas and interesting points mentioned, and I'll list them here individually.
FMJC Conventions -- I could not show my face before any of those present if I did not mention that the FMJC Convention for 2009 is July 1-5 in Philadelphia. It should be a good program, with lots of good ideas to bring back for use in Columbus.
Mike Mills of Cincinnati, who is on the executive committee of FMJC, wants Columbus to host the FJMC Convention in 2011. This will require a lot of work and fundraising on our part
Hagbah Training -- This is a little program that was demonstrated by Dr. Ira Ungar of Pittsburgh that he developed as a way to ensure that there are always knowledgeable people available to lift the Torah in the synagogue. The program takes about 45 minutes, and teaches people a fool-proof way to lift the scroll, no matter how heavy or lopsided it might be.
Monday Night Sex, Beer and Football -- This is a program that combines everything, including a weekly d'var, that one might want in a Men's Club program.
Hearing Men's Voices -- This is a longstanding FJMC program that we could include as a part of other programming, or we could begin as a separate deal. It basically involves picking a topic -- over the weekend, it was dealing with aging parents -- and letting people explore their own feelings about things through their and others' experiences.
Sundry other things -- Also mentioned were the World Wide Wrap, Build-a-Pair, Yom Hashoah candles and the FJMC Convention for 2009. And a host of others that will blip in and out of my memory over the next couple weeks. Did I mention the 2009 convention. This was a very big item for the two FJMC facilitators present. We all should consider going to the FJMC convention in Philadelphia in 2009.

It's Quiz Night!

After a hiatus of a couple years, Men's Club is bringing back synagogue-wide Quiz Night. It is scheduled for Saturday evening, January 24th. Look for more information coming soon.

Two brunches and a trip to Canton

Next Men's Club Brunch, Sunday, November 9, 10:15. The speaker will be Bill Cohen, statehouse correspondent for National Public Radio, who will discuss the election results.
Trip to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton on Sunday, November 16. We will arrive at the hall at approximately 11 AM and stay until about 3. For those who plan to arrive earlier or stay later, their hours are 9 AM to 5 PM. Admission is $15.00 for adults and $8.00 for children ages 6 to 14. There is a two for one discount coupon in the Entertainment Book For those of you concerned about missing games that day, the Bengals are at home against the Eagles at 1:00. The Steelers are at San Diego at 4:15. The Browns play on Monday night at Buffalo. (No excuses for you Browns fans not to attend!!) For additional information, please contact Mark Rosensen mrosen3216@aol.com.
The December 14 Brunch speaker will be Gary Smith, president of the brotherhood at Cincinnati's Adath Israel Congregation and an FJMC Keruv consultant.

No prayerbook on hand? Turn on your 'JewBerry'

Thousands of observant Jews around the world are praying three times a day - using their BlackBerry handheld devices.
A software program for BlackBerries combines Hebrew prayers and technology, the brainchild of two entrepreneurs who attended New York's Yeshiva University.
The program, which provides texts of daily prayers instead of the traditional, printed book, has been dubbed the JewBerry.
The program is not linked to Research in Motion Ltd., maker of the BlackBerry.
Throughout the day, Jews gather in office-building stairwells and conference rooms to pray, and while sometimes you might not remember your prayer book, no one goes anywhere without their BlackBerry, says co-creator Jonathan Bennett, of Cedarhurst, Long Island.

A visit from Mrs. Strickland

Men's Club President Dale Levy poses with Ohio first lady Frances Strickland after the brunch.

(NOTE: This article and photo have been submitted by Lillian Kowalski for publication in the Ohio Jewish Chronicle and The New Standard.)

On Sunday Sept. 21, the Men’s Club of Congregation Tifereth Israel started a new year of programming with a very special guest. At their first monthly brunch of the year, Ohio State First Lady Frances Strickland addressed the crowd on the growing crisis in public education.
Mrs. Strickland concentrated on expressing ideas for fostering creativity in students and modeling learning based on them. She also explained the idea of a “both/and” policy that makes certain all areas of learning are covered and that one area is not left out for the sake of heightening another.
Born in Kentucky, Mrs. Strickland has a doctorate degree in educational psychology from the University of Kentucky and has devoted her life to working for the betterment of children’s education.
“Mrs. Strickland provided a wonderful start to Men's Club's annual brunch speaker series” said Bill Chronister, vice president of Men’s Club. “Her discussion of trends in public education showed how much thought the current administration is putting into the effort to improve our schools. And our congregants had a lot of good questions and comments, making for a thought-provoking discussion. Of course, the brunch could not have gone so well without the participation of Sisterhood.”
In coming months, Men’s Club brunch speakers will feature Bill Cohen, Statehouse correspondent for WOSU; Gary Smith, president of Men’s Club at Adath Israel Congregation in Cincinnati, and Tifereth Israel president Howard Schottenstein. More information will be available in this publication closer to the events.

Texas Hold 'Em a hit in Ohio

They said it couldn't be done, but the first Congregation Tifereth Israel Texas Hold 'Em Poker Tournament came off without a hitch -- or a hitching post.
Organized by Dale Levy, Douglas Segerman and Jerry Sigal, 30 players spent the evening of Sunday, Sept. 21, going all-in in the Upper Social Hall.
Those finishing in the money were:
Grand champion: Douglas Segerman
Second place: Mike Petersen
Third place: Lee Budin
Fourth place: Marc Carrol
Fifth place: Karl Rubin
And especially gratifying: The fundraiser raised some funds!
Jerry says he's ready for the next one. Let him know (jerrysigal@midohiobenefitsgroup.com) whether you want it quarterly or annually.

Frances Strickland gives us lots to chew over

Mrs. Strickland provided a wonderful start to Men's Club's annual brunch speaker series. Her discussion of trends in public education showed how much thought the current administration is putting into the effort to improve our schools. And our congregants had a lot of good questions and comments, making for a thought-provoking discussion.
Of course, the brunch could not have gone so well without the participation of Sisterhood.
Our brunch lineup for the remainder of 2008 is:
Oct. 12 -- Howard Schottenstein, president of Congregation Tifereth Israel, on initiatives for our shul.
Nov. 9 -- Bill Cohen, Statehouse correspondent for WOSU, on the outcome of the presidential election.
Dec. 14 -- Gary Smith, Men's Club president, Adath Israel Congregation of Cincinnati, discussing new initiatives on the national scene.

Welcome back to shul!

Welcome back, everyone! We hope you enjoyed your summer. We sure enjoyed ours! The Men’s Club took a road trip to Cleveland to watch the Reds dominate the Indians. And, we tailgated with Agudas Achim men's club members at a Clippers game.
On July 27, we had our annual picnic at the JCC. The weather was perfect and the food wasn’t so bad either. We enjoyed burgers and dogs and had a highly competitive wiffleball game. We also introduced our officers: President, Dale Levy; Vice President, Bill Chronister; Treasurer, Matt Kennedy; and Secretary, Mike Sobul.
Thank you to everyone who participated and volunteered.

Look at these can't-miss Sunday brunches

The Men's Club is proud to present the lineup for its first three Sunday brunches this fall.
We'll kick off the year on Sept. 21, the first day of Hebrew school, with Ohio's first lady, Frances Strickland.
Mrs. Strickland will speak at 10:30 a.m., just after Hebrew school parents' orientation in the upper social hall. So if you're a parent, by all means stay for the talk -- and have a bagel and maybe a schmear while you're at it.
In October, we'll move up from the governor's wife to our very own synagogue president, Howard Schottenstein. Howard will speak on his plans during his tenure as our community's leader at 10:30 a.m. on Oct. 12.
After the elections in November, we've asked Bill Cohen of NPR to come and present a recap and analysis. He'll speak at 10:30 a.m. on Nov. 9.
As usual, the Sunday brunches are free to all who wish to attend, although donations are always welcome.
For further information, or to volunteer to help -- especially for the first brunch -- please contact Bill Chronister, wtchron@gmail.com; or Mike Sobul, lsobul@wowway.com.
