Busy December, January

Talk about activities -- the Men's Club's got tons of them in the next few months.
It all starts at 10:30 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 6, with the latest installment of the Men's Club brunch. We'll have CTI congregant Cathy Levine, executive director of UHCAN Ohio, a statewide consumer health advocacy organization and a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation grantee to build a coordinated voice for health-care reform in Ohio.
Cathy co-chairs Ohio Consumer for Health Coverage, the coalition convened to develop a coordinated voice of consumer constituencies working for high-quality, affordable health care for all Ohioans. She will talk about national health-care reform, which she calls "a leading civil-rights issue of our generation."
She'll talk about the historical imperative (from a Jewish perspective) for passing reform this year; what's actually in the House and Senate bills, and what the challenges and fights are about -- who pays for reform, how do we reduce health-care spending while improving quality of care, etc. Then, she'll answer question and lead a lively discussion.

On Dec. 10 is the annual Poker Night/latke cook-off, as we combine the monthly game of Texas Hold 'em with the first major chore for our Hanukah Dinner. You can come cook latkes no matter whether you play poker. Cards fly at 6:30, with latke-frying beginning about the same time. If you're playing poker, feel free to join the cooks at the end of your game.
The Hanukah Dinner, co-sponsored by Chazak and USY, is Sunday, Dec. 13. Men's Club will need seven volunteers to prep for dinner from 1 to 3:30 p.m. and four mmen to make final preparations from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. While the theme this year is Magical Hanukah, it ain't magic that gets it done. January also is chockfull of events. Brunch is Jan. 10, the Men's Club/Women of Tifereth Israel Shabbat and second annual Quiz Night are both on Jan. 23 and the return of the Tifereth Israel Open poker tournament comes on the night of Jan. 24. Take Me Out To The Ballpark

The Men's Club of Congregation Tifereth Israel and the Brotherhood of Congregation Agudas Achim are co-sponsoring Jewish Community Day on Sunday, August 2, at Huntington Park. A Kosher Lunch will be served at 3 p.m. Kids will get to walk on field before the Columbus Clippers game. Our very own Cantor Jack Chomsky will sing the national anthem as the game begins at 5 p.m.

Shomrei Ha'Aretz

We are “Guardians of the Land.” The Men's Club provides 100% renewable, soy-based Shabbat candles to our congregation. They are biodegradable, have lead-free wicks, recyclable metal tins, and are available in the gift shop.

April showers bring May activities

9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Sunday, May 3 -- Volunteers needed to help Men's Club with annual flower planting. Drop your kids off for Sunday school and stick around to help us dig in over 500 plants around CTI grounds (and then attend Cultural Arts Event music concert).
Complimentary bagels and beverages to volunteers. Please bring hand shovels.

10:30 a.m. Sunday, May 10 -- The final Men's Club Brunch of the year. The Brunch is being co-sponsored by the Women of Tifereth Israel. The speaker will be Avram Kluger of the Columbus Jewish Federation, whill speak efforts to communicate with schools and the business community to avoid schedule conflicts with the Jewish holidays.
Also at the meeting, there will be a vote on proposed changes to the Men's Club bylaws. The proposed changes are attached. Please review them before the meeting.

February Men's Club schedule

February Brunch Series -- This Sunday, the 8th, our Brunch speaker will be Ken Schnake, general manager of the Columbus Clippers, who will talk about the Clippers move into the new ballpark. Brunch starts at 10:30.
Kosher Passover Wine Tasting Party -- Men's Club will be sponsoring a Kosher Passover Wine Tasting on March 15. The event will take place at the home of Carl & Susie Seletz. Information on time and cost is forthcoming. For more information, contact Dale Levy at drlevy@ohioctvs.com.
Purim Carnival -- The Purim Carnival will be Sunday, March 8th from 11:30 to 1:30. If you are interested in helping out, please contact Mike Sobul at Lsobul@wowway.com. Men's club will also be holding a silent auction in the Atrium that day. If you wish to donte or can solicit items to be donated and auctioned, also let Mike know.
Synagogue Dinner/Dance -- The synagogue will be hosting a dinner/dance honoring past presidents on April 26, in lieu of a Spotlight Series event.
