Coming in January! -- From the President

Men’s Club Brunch Series
Every month the Men’s Club hosts a brunch in the upper social hall. Brunch begins about 10:30 and we usually finish by 11:30. We will feature a delicious brunch and have a speaker dicussing interesting and timely topics. We had another great Brunch in November; thank you to Bill Cohen from the Ohio Public Radio Statehouse Bureau who led an interesting discussion about the election and its implications for Ohio. Our brunch series continues on Sunday, Jan. 11, when we welcome TI members Franklin County Probate Judge Eric Brown and Franklin County Commissioner Marilyn Brown. They will lead a lively discusion on Jewish invovement in public service. We look forward to our February Brunch on Sunday, Feb. 1, when we sponsor the annual Scholar-In-Residence brunch.

What is Keruv
The word "keruv" is Hebrew, and its root means "to bring close." As the word implies, keruv initiatives are aimed at bringing people closer to the synagogue, the Jewish community, and Jewish life itself. The Federation of Jewish Men's Club and the USCJ's Keruv initiatives, seek to provide guidance and comfort to those within congregations who are intermarried, whose children are intermarried, or who have extended family of another faith. The issue of intermarriage confronts us as a community and within our own families. Given the fact of the dual faith marriage, how do we reach out to encourage these families to adopt a Jewish lifestyle, indeed to increase their involvement in Jewish life? Where do we begin as a congregation and as individuals to transform ourselves to make this outreach a success? Should this be a priority at this time?
Here at Tifereth Israel Men’s Club Vice President Bill Chronister and Treasurer Matthew Kennedy are leading the effort. If you have questions, please share them with Bill and Matt.

Poker Night
Why not go all-in?! We earned a Silver Torch Award at the Federation Convention for our monthly poker game. In September we held our first Tournement and raised over $1000. See what the excitement is all about! Play no-limits Texas hold-em with us every month. Our next Poker night is on Thursday January 8th. Games begin at 6:30 and end at 9:30. The locations are TBA. Buy-in is $30 and $5 for dinner. See you there. For more information, please contact Doug Segerman djsegerman@earthlink.net.

Sunday Morning Café and Wednesday Morning Minyan
We look forward to bringing you a delightful nosh on Sunday mornings as you go to class, drop your children off for school or drop in to daven. Each Sunday Morning that Hebrew School is in session the Men’s Club Café will be open in the atrium. The menu includes bagels with the fixins, orange juice, coffee, and hot chocolate. There are tables set up in the atrium for people to sit at and enjoy their breakfast. Don’t forget, we also provide breakfast after minyan on Wednesday mornings.

Did You Know. . .?
Every month we join other local synagogue members and visit Jewish prisoners. Keep your calendars open for a future Men’s Club Brunch to discuss this important topic.
Would you like to donate books for the prisoners? The Men’s Club and the TI Library are teaming up to collect books to bring to Jewish Prisoners. If you have books to donate, please contact Dale Levy at drlevy@ohioctvs.com or Helen Chronister at hchronister@tiferethisrael.org.
Last month the Men’s Club took a road trip to Canton to visit the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
This year The Men’s Club will be donating new text books for the religious school.
Other activities the Men’s Club participates in include the spring planting of flowers around the synagogue.
Men's Club members and their families are invited to participate in all our activities and community events.

World Wide Wrap and Build-A-Pair
This year the Men’s Club will is partnering with the Hebrew School in a new educational program called Build-a-Pair. This is a comprehensive and fun learning program to introduce 5th graders to the joy and mitzvah of Tefillin in Jewish life. Students will practice writing their Hebrew/Jewish names and the Shema (first line) to insert into pre-made wooden Tefillin boxes. Students decorate the boxes in any creative way they wish, allowing for personal expression. The program culminates at the World Wide Wrap on Sunday, February 1st where students join their parents in donning their Tefillin. This year WWW coincides with our Scholar-In-Residence weekend and we will have a terrific brunch immediately after services.
If you would like to wrap tefillin for the first time or if you would like to wrap tefillin again please join us. If you are able to volunteer with this exciting program or would like more information please contact Dale Levy at drlevy@ohioctvs.com .
